Daily brief · 2026-07-30

A divided Fed hold and a jump in long yields hit quantum's pure-plays hardest, while the semicap chain that gates qubit scaling extended its own rout — Alphabet's diversification made it the day's only real refuge.

Alphabet was the only meaningful green in the quantum basket, +0.9% to $336.71 — and it led by having the least to do with quantum. Its Willow-era program is a rounding error against a search-and-cloud P&L, so on a day the market re-priced duration it behaved as the diversified mega-cap it is, not as a quantum bet. That is the tell for the whole session: the Fed held rates in a fractured 9-3 vote, with three regional presidents pushing for an immediate hike, and the 10-year yield jumped seven basis points past 4.67%. Nothing about quantum's physics changed on Wednesday; the discount rate applied to its very long-dated payoffs did.

Arqit was the laggard at −11.7% to $15.49, with no company news — simply the purest duration instrument in the basket. Arqit sits on the quantum-safe key-distribution chokepoint, a post-quantum-cryptography story whose entire value is in cash flows years out, and that is precisely the profile the market sells first when yields spike. The read is structural rather than idiosyncratic: the further a name's payoff sits in the future, the harder a hawkish-surprise tape marks it down.

The pure-play computing names all broke together — Rigetti −9.0% to $13.22, D-Wave −8.3% to $16.21, IonQ −5.6% to $31.99, Quantum Computing Inc −5.4% to $7.30. More telling for the vertical's actual chokepoint, the enabling-hardware chain that gates qubit scaling — the lasers, cryogenics, vacuum and metrology — fell with the broader four-day semiconductor-equipment rout driven by reports of Chinese state-backed DUV lithography mass-production and memory-maker CXMT's Shanghai debut: MKS Instruments −9.7% to $257.61, Coherent −8.7% to $222.05, Applied Materials −8.4% to $436.45, with AMD −5.5% to $429.56 and Nvidia −3.6% to $190.01 in sympathy. Own the tools that make the qubits and you inherit the semicap cycle's beta, up and down.

The calendar gives the basket real prints to reset on. Linde reports Q2 today (July 30) — the rare-gas and helium choke that every dilution refrigerator depends on. GlobalFoundries follows August 4, its first quarter with the Quantum arm broken out; ASP Isotopes reports August 12-14 with a silicon-28 update; IonQ prints August 12, Coherent August 13, and Keysight — the quantum test-and-measurement chokepoint — August 18. NVIDIA lands August 26, IEEE Quantum Week runs September 13-18 in Toronto, and the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act is targeted for floor votes by end-September. Those events, not one hawkish afternoon, decide the trend.
