IBM held the classical-coprocessing choke up 1.7% as a defensive quantum bid while Coherent gave back its entire earnings pop, down 12.8%, in the AI-optics selloff.

The classical-coprocessing choke led — because it was the least speculative place to hide. IBM rose +1.7% to $232.67 while the rest of the quantum complex sold off, extending its role as the low-beta way to own the theme: consistent cash flow, a real dividend, and a hardware roadmap for investors who want quantum exposure without the pure-play volatility. On a session where 19-year-high yields punished every high-multiple growth name, the coprocessing-and-error-correction layer — the classical silicon that has to wrap any quantum processor to be useful — was the choke that behaved like an anchor rather than a lottery ticket.

The laggard was the photonics choke, and it fell despite good numbers. Coherent dropped −12.8% to $306.43, giving back the entire +7.8% pop it had booked Monday on a fiscal Q4 beat (EPS $1.74 vs. $1.62 consensus, Q1 guidance $1.85–$2.05 above the $1.77 Street). The move was valuation, not fundamentals: after a triple-digit year-to-date run that had priced the stock near 160x trailing earnings, the AI-optics cohort was primed to unwind on any risk-off day, and this was one. Lasers and precision photonics are the quantum control choke — the beams that trap, cool, and read ions and atoms — so when the market reprices the optical supply chain, it reprices the tooling every neutral-atom and trapped-ion platform depends on.

The platform pure-plays took the brunt. IonQ fell −5.8% to $44.12, D-Wave −6.4% to $19.53, Rigetti −5.1% to $17.71, Quantum Computing Inc. −5.9% to $8.52, and Arqit −9.7% to $21.98 as the speculative end of the board derated with yields. The control-and-fabrication choke sold with the semis: Keysight −5.6% to $341 (reporting fiscal Q3 that very afternoon), MKS Instruments −6.4% to $300.24, IPG Photonics −7.7% to $81.31, FormFactor −10.0% to $124.34, Applied Materials −3.9%, Intel −6.6%, GlobalFoundries −6.6%. The isotopes-and-materials choke was the calm corner — Linde +0.9%, Air Products +0.8% — a reminder that the gas-and-cryogen suppliers price off industrial demand, not AI sentiment.

The calendar carries real catalysts. Keysight's fiscal Q3 print lands into this tape, Nvidia — whose CUDA-Q stack anchors the coprocessing choke IBM just led — reports August 26, and ASPI has guided first commercial silicon-28 shipments for Q3, the isotopically pure feedstock the qubit-fabrication choke needs. IEEE Quantum Week (QCE26) runs in Toronto September 13–18, and the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act faces floor votes targeted for late September. The near-term tell is whether the photonics unwind that took Coherent down spreads to the tooling names, or stays a valuation reset on the most-loved AI-optics trade.
