Quantum pure-plays led a risk-off retreat as capital rotated out of pre-profit tech, with Rigetti down 5.5% while the enabling-hardware names — Bruker, Coherent — held green.
The session split cleanly along the stack: the platform pure-plays sold, the picks-and-shovels held. Bruker led the tape at +2.2% to $59.92 — a scientific-instruments and analytical-tools maker that sits in the isotopes-and-materials and characterization layer rather than in any qubit itself, exactly the kind of enabling-hardware name that holds when speculative capital leaves the room. Coherent added +0.9% to $290.03 and FormFactor +0.7% to $115.71, both in the lasers/precision-photonics and fabrication-and-test chokepoints — the durable revenue under quantum, insulated from the daily sentiment swing in the platform names.
The laggard was the highest-beta corner of the platform sleeve. Rigetti fell −5.5% to $16.07, with no company-specific news; this was rotation, not a thesis crack. The pure-play quantum-computing complex has been the sharpest expression of the market's appetite for pre-profit, high-multiple tech, and on a day when Treasury yields reversed higher and capital pulled back from exactly that cohort, it fell hardest. IonQ −4.2% to $41.53, Quantum Computing Inc. −3.3% to $8.14, D-Wave −2.7% to $18.80 and Arqit −2.7% to $20.94 all followed — a uniform de-rating of the platform layer while the underlying commercial bookings (IonQ's revenue growth, D-Wave's H1 bookings surge) sat unchanged in the background.
Elsewhere in the basket the moves were milder and macro-driven. ASP Isotopes eased −3.4% to $3.95 in the isotopes-and-quantum-materials choke that gates silicon-28 and enriched feedstock, and American Superconductor −3.6% to $30.05. The foundry and classical-co-processing anchors gave back modestly — GlobalFoundries −2.6% to $47.33, IBM −1.5% to $233.69 — with NVIDIA off just −0.3% to $216.85. Note the enrichment-and-materials chokepoint held up better than the platforms: when the market doubts timelines to fault-tolerance, it still pays for the physical inputs that every architecture consumes regardless of who wins.
The calendar ahead is policy- and science-driven rather than earnings-driven. NVIDIA's fiscal Q2 on August 26 is the near-term macro read for the whole compute-adjacent complex. Then IEEE Quantum Week (QCE26) convenes in Toronto September 13–18, ASP Isotopes has guided its first commercial silicon-28 shipments for Q3, and the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act faces House and Senate floor action toward the end of September — the funding backbone the domestic quantum-materials and fabrication chokepoints are built around. Further out, DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative concludes Stage B on November 6, opening the Stage C downselect. The structural story is intact; Thursday was the market repricing patience, not progress.
