A blockbuster earnings print and a fresh upgrade sent the quantum pure-plays sharply higher, with Infleqtion up 12.5%, while the semiconductor incumbents sat out the speculative bid.
Friday belonged to the platform pure-plays. Infleqtion led at +12.5% to $14.12, but the fuse was lit elsewhere in the basket: Quantum Computing Inc. reported second-quarter revenue of $5.6 million against roughly $61,000 a year earlier — a more than 9,000% jump driven by photonics product sales to government, education and commercial customers — and D-Wave Quantum drew a new Outperform rating and $35 price target from BMO Capital, implying ~85% upside. The pair pulled the entire platform layer up with them: Rigetti +11.5% to $17.91, QUBT +9.6% to $8.92, D-Wave +8.5% to $20.39 and IonQ +8.0% to $44.86. These are the platform-pure-play names the desk tracks precisely because they concentrate the qubit-fabrication and control-electronics chokepoints in a single, high-beta wrapper.
The laggard was the incumbency. Intel closed −2.2% to $90.07, the leading-edge-foundry name that gates domestic qubit fabrication but that did not participate in the speculative rush; the semiconductor tooling and photonics-adjacent names drifted with it — IPGP −1.6%, FormFactor −1.3%, Applied Materials −0.8%. The session's tell is the divergence: capital chased the platforms that price the promise of scaled logical qubits, not the foundry-and-equipment strait that will actually have to manufacture them.
The measured toolchain names split the difference. IBM firmed +0.9% to $235.68 on the strength of its own roadmap, and NVIDIA slipped −1.0% into its print; the classical-co-processing-and-error-correction layer — where GPUs do the heavy lifting of decoding — remains the connective tissue between the two camps. For a vertical whose entire thesis is that the bottleneck is not "a quantum computer" but the cryogenics, control electronics, ultra-high-vacuum systems and isotopically pure materials that surround one, a day driven by a single revenue surprise is a reminder of how sentiment-led the tradeable names still are.
The calendar sharpens into the fall. NVIDIA reports fiscal Q2 on August 26, IEEE Quantum Week (QCE26) convenes in Toronto September 13–18, and ASPI has guided first commercial silicon-28 shipments — the isotopes-and-materials chokepoint — for Q3. The policy overhang is the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act (H.R. 8462 / S. 3597), still awaiting floor votes, and the DARPA Quantum Benchmarking Initiative's Stage C down-select, expected around December, which will separate the funded platforms from the field. Today's move was a sentiment spike; those are the events that grade the hardware.
