A Morgan Stanley call lifted the whole quantum platform rung — Quantinuum +11.1% as its top pick — while the enabling-tools rung sold with semiconductors.
The leader was Quantinuum (QNT), up 11.1% to $36.68 on a Morgan Stanley upgrade to Overweight that named it the firm's top quantum computing pick. Analyst Joseph Moore argued the trapped-ion platform leads its pure-play peers on technology and execution yet carries the lowest multiple on 2030 revenue in the group, flagging 2027 — when the Sol system is expected — as the key test year; the bank trimmed its target to $62 from $78 even as it upgraded. The stock had been pinned near a 52-week low of $33.02, so this was a company-specific repricing of the platform chokepoint, not a market tide: it came on a day the Nasdaq rose barely 0.1%.
That call carried the platform rung with it. Morgan Stanley's broader thesis — that quantum computing could one day be a $100B market — lifted IonQ (IONQ) +9.3% to $34.35, Quantum Computing (QUBT) +8.4% to $6.84, Rigetti (RGTI) +8.1% to $12.63 and D-Wave (QBTS) +6.5% to $12.81. The isotope and materials rung joined, with ASP Isotopes (ASPI) +6.8% to $2.21 and American Superconductor (AMSC) +4.8% to $26.89.
The laggard was FormFactor (FORM), down 5.3% to $113.34 — the probe-card and test rung that gates every qubit and wafer measurement, which followed the semiconductor complex lower in Thursday's rotation out of AI hardware after Wednesday's hot-CPI print. The rest of the enabling-tools chokepoint sold in step: Coherent (COHR) −4.8% to $250.60, Keysight (KEYS) −4.3% to $342.08, Applied Materials (AMAT) −3.7% to $430.01 and Intel (INTC) −2.8% to $95.37. The split is the session's real signal — the speculative platform names rose on a sell-side narrative while the metrology and photonics picks-and-shovels derated with chips. Sumitomo Heavy's cryogenics line was also weak on its Tokyo session (down roughly 7%), though its thin US ADR mark overstated the move and should not be read literally.
The hard catalysts are federal and dated. DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative concludes Stage B and runs its Stage C down-select through November and December — the single most consequential validation event for the platform rung Morgan Stanley just re-rated, with Quantinuum (QNT) among the names whose year-end hinges on it. Q2B26 in Chicago (December 8–10) is the next industry gathering where roadmaps get set. Until then, expect the platform names to trade on sentiment and the tools rung to trade with the SOX.
