Daily brief · 2026-10-19
The quantum-computing pure-plays took the worst of a rate-repricing risk-off, with the platform rung routed while enabling-tech and cryogenics names held.
The nominal leader was Sumitomo Heavy Industries' ADR (SOHVY), up 5.7% to $9.02 on its latest Tokyo session — a thin-line bounce in the cryogenics chokepoint (cryocoolers and dilution-refrigerator components that keep superconducting qubits near absolute zero) with no disclosed company catalyst. It is worth naming only because almost nothing else in the desk was green: the day's real story was a broad rout in the platform and qubit-fabrication rung, and the handful of gainers were the enabling-materials names — Silex (SILXY) +3.8% to $12.90 in isotopes, and the helium-3-cryogens suppliers Linde (LIN) +1.0% to $498.43 and Air Products (APD) +1.0% to $299.59.
The laggard was Arqit Quantum (ARQQ), down 11.8% to $14.02, leading a platform-rung bloodbath. The most speculative, longest-duration part of the stack took the full force of a hotter-than-expected September inflation print and the cost-of-capital repricing behind it: Infleqtion (INFQ) −9.8% to $8.55, IonQ (IONQ) −8.9% to $31.28, D-Wave (QBTS) −8.1% to $11.78, Quantum Computing (QUBT) −7.0% to $6.36 and Rigetti (RGTI) −6.6% to $11.80. These are pre-revenue names valued on a terminal story; when the discount rate moves, they move most. The structural read is that the market is pricing the financing of the quantum buildout, not any change in its physics.
The enabling-tech rung softened with the broader semiconductor complex, which was in its ninth straight down-session. FormFactor (FORM) fell 7.3% to $105.01 on the cryogenic-test-and-control side, Coherent (COHR) 7.1% to $232.90 in lasers-and-photonics, and MKS (MKSI) 6.0% to $214.83 across photonics and UHV. Classical-coprocessing dragged too — AMD (AMD) −6.0% to $528.75, NVIDIA (NVDA) −1.4% to $214.13 — while IBM (IBM) held relatively firm at −0.8% to $232.14. The vacuum and isotopes suppliers were quieter, a reminder that the plumbing of the stack trades less violently than the platforms on top of it.
The calendar is the thing to watch from here. DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative runs its Stage B-to-Stage C down-select decisions from November 6 through mid-December — the government validation that most directly re-rates the platform names in either direction. Q2B26 Chicago (December 8–10) and Gooch & Housego's FY2026 results (December 8) follow. Until the rate picture settles, the platform rung will keep trading as the market's highest-beta expression of quantum risk, and the materials rung as its ballast.
